Seed provides micro-entrepreneuship training and support to the members of an association of young mothers in Catamayo, Ecuador. Combining different funding sources, seed managed to offer ongoing support over three years, leading the opening of a new non profit bar and community center.
Catamayo is a village of 20’000 inhabitants in the South of Ecuador, on the Andes. Educational excellence in the community is represented by the kindergarten Pettirosso, managed by the local associacion Amigos de los Niños with the support of ABC, a small Swiss association. Seed came into play when the women of the association decided to start an activity that would both provide them with a revenue and support the Pettirosso.
First training: April 2010
This project aimed at enabling young women in Catamayo to create their own jobs and at the same time support the Pettirosso.
After a design phase, the project started with a 10-day entrepreneurship workshop in Catamayo, with the participation of 12 women from the local association in summer 2010. Of the business plans developed, one came into life the following year, and another 10-day mission allowed seed to provide support: the Cafeteria Arcobaleno opened, a new bar and aggregation point for young people. In 2012, another 3-week mission was set up to equip Cafeteria Arcobaleno, now in a new and more central location, with skills and tools for proposing social activities. Ongoing online support was provided between missions and is currently ongoing.
The Cafeteria Arcobaleno is currently providing a job to three women, and is configurated as a non profit enterprise, supporting the kindergarten Pettirosso with its profits. Cafeteria Arcobaleno is now recognized as a local aggregation point by young people and their mothers. Ongoing activities are scheduled, and seed is looking for further support to let this white-feather experience grow.
